Everyone always talks about building your network. Grow your connections. Go to events. Put yourself out there. Post on LinkedIn. But hardly anyone talks about actually using your network. What’s the point of 500+ connections if they just sit there gathering digital dust? How can they actually help you get a new job?
Unlike most of the success stories and advice I see about job hunting, I very rarely post on LinkedIn. I do have over 500 connections, but that’s partly down to the “everyone’s adding everyone, even people they don’t know” vibe that dominated when I was at uni. It’s giving when it made you “cool” to have the most friends on Facebook when you were 14. Yet, despite my (for lack of a better word) sh*t LinkedIn presence, networking has landed me almost every job I’ve had. Here’s how.
