If you’ve not figured it out yet - cover letters are not fun and they’re definitely not easy. If you were to ask us, they’re a dying tradition. But as the saying goes, old habits die hard, and many companies won’t even look at you without a tailor-made essay, so buckle up…
Here’s 4 things to include in a cover letter:
Don’t be afraid of fun
The purpose of a cover letter is to sell yourself and your experience, so let’s start with not sounding like a reincarnate of ChatGPT. Bring the personality. Get the reader excited by you and the thought of working with you.
Show off a little
Now you’ve got their attention, you want one or two paragraphs on your experience, what you’ve achieved, and your transferable skills. This is basically your time to show off, but make sure you can back it up.
Do your research
Hiring managers love a teacher’s pet, so make sure you tie everything back to the business and the specific role you’re applying for. Maybe call out some keywords in the job description, or name drop a piece of work they recently published. Brownie points galore.
Wrap it up
You’ve told them they’re great, you’re great, everyone’s great. Now cut the cameras. You want to keep it short and sweet so they don’t get bored and you don’t repeat yourself. We’re talking one page max.
Beyond a lil spell check and a proofread, you should be good to go. Now, armed with your shiny new cover letter, you’re one step closer to bagging your dream job. Good luck out there!
